Kill Room

As much as I thoroughly enjoy seeing elegant and graceful suspensions, there is certainly something to be said about well executed, creepy photographs like this set featuring Angel Beau of Las Vegas Suspensions. It is easy enough to take some photos of bloody hooks in flesh and try to make a scene appear gory. In this case, however, the hooks may be the least creepy element of the photo. Angel and photographer Curtis Walker came together to create this “Dexter” inspired kill room at Photo Bang Bang. All of the time they spent on attention to small details around the room really added to the tone and texture they achieved in the images they created.

Positive Feedback

We rarely get the opportunity to post experiences on here, but sometimes it’s nice to have a reminder of the impact we have on the lives of those that we suspend. I think it also sheds some light for those who haven’t been through the experience of body suspension to see what it is we get from this amazing practice. Thank you so much to the Skindependent Suspension team for sending this in and to Jessica Webb for this beautifully written account of her suspension with them. I’m so glad you took so many positive things away from this suspension. It looks and sounds like you had an incredibly time. And now, without further ado, here is her 8 point angel suspension captured in her own words.

Winning the Battle

It’s a day for the suspension community worldwide to have at least a small celebration. On Monday, the Springfield, Missouri city council voted 4-3 against regulation that would have restricted when and where we would be allowed to practice body suspension, and possibly would have restricted who could even view a body suspension taking place. For this final meeting, Shane Shields stepped up to remind the council of the rights they would be taking away from those who participate in suspension, as well as the long list of burdens they would place on the city in needing to not only set into place these new laws but also to monitor and enforce them. The nightmare of paperwork alone in sorting through release forms, permissions, neighbor signatures, and a hundred other things would have to fall on the city. Along with that there would also come writing, rewriting, and continuing to fight similar issues as the door would then be open for every hostile neighbor to file a complaint when someone near them didn’t behave as they saw fit. Apparently it was enough to sway a few votes. I am sure there are a few people who were not thrilled with the outcome, and it very well could still come up before the coucil again if amendments are made to it and another vote is needed. The directors of Springfield AGRO have encouraged the suspension community to reach out to the head of the city council Jim O’neal at joneal@springfieldmo.gov to thank them for protecting the suspension community in Springfield. A little gratitude from all of us might go a long way should this issue ever arise again in their city.

And while you are at it, make sure you send a congratulations out to the directors of AGRO Springfield for the hard work, as well as to Rick Pierceall who was there for them every step of the way. They had their friends beside them for support, but when it comes down to it, these guys all busted their asses to handle a rough situation that they were thrown into unexpectedly.

Congratulations to all of you on your success after such a drawn out fight.

Pulling Together

Although AGRO’s Superpull event typically begins when everyone comes together on Sunday, this year Nassau Chainsaw made the very long trip down to get the excitement started Saturday night. I was heartbroken not to make it in time for the show, but I have heard from everyone who was able to be there that it was phenomenal. Considering their combination of music, energy, and hooks on stage, as well as their history with Peter and Spliff, I couldn’t imagine a more fitting group to kick off the weekend than these guys. I think for a lot of the people who were present, this show was much needed therapy. Whether they were catching up with friends, taking hooks, or getting roughed up in the pit, it was exactly what a lot of they needed to get things in motion for Superpull.

Action and Reaction

Many of us have been watching closely as the city of Springfield Missouri decides what direction they will take in regulating the act of body suspension. As the situation unfolds, it seems that more and more people are stepping in to write these rules and regulations that have little to no understanding of what it is we do. The reality is that body suspension for many is so foreign and so beyond what they view as normal, that they will never be able to see the same beauty in it that we all do. Unfortunately, it is from this outsider’s view that decisions are being made that may very well tell those in Springfield how and where they can choose to take part in this incredible experience.

Living Art

Although play piercing is nothing new in our community, it is something that I have only recently seen being used by artists to create a blending between body piercing and flesh pulls. We first featured it here in the stunning piece created by Solvere7, and now we have these beautiful wings to enjoy, created by Jesse Rumsey using a somewhat different approach to the concept. Rather than running lines from the needles to a rigging plate or bar to create tension, he used the metal framework shaping these wings to lace the entire design, and then gently lifted the piece, pulling the skin into place along with it. The result is lovely, and lucky for us, it’s only the beginning in a series of projects that Jesse hopes to complete with this style of piercing pull.

All for One

A few weeks ago, the concept of ‘Attack Brazil’ was first announced. What started as a way to bring together artists in Brazil, turned into a community-wide effort as teams around the world stepped in to participate and show their support. As the list of those suspending grew, it became apparent how happy everyone was to see an effort aimed toward uniting a growing community of practitioners. Well now that it has come and gone, we are getting to see the product of their suspension day, and it looks like everyone had a wonderful time!

Love and Loss

Regardless of your chosen beliefs or lack thereof, I think we can all agree that there is an amazing energy that comes with body suspension. The connection it brings between each of us and the powerful effect of that experience can be life changing. For me, I view body suspension as one of the greatest gifts ever put into my life, and likewise, the greatest gift I can share with anyone. Many of us know the overwhelming joy of helping someone go up for the first time, or being there as they move through the process from suspendee to a skilled practitioner. Peter Tabaco was one individual lucky enough to have shared this beautiful craft with so many people that he loved and considered family. Working with Disgraceland Hook Squad, he was there for many of the practitioners that are still with them today as they learned the ropes. After he passed away, Disgraceland, along with a few close friends, offered up the most fitting tribute they could; a day full of suspensions in the same place so many of them had learned with Peter.

Levitate Tallinn

After over a year and a half of daily digging and sorting through suspension images, it always catches me off guard when I come across really great suspension photos where I don’t recognize any of the people involved. It also makes me extremely excited; it means another group in our growing family of practitioners that is taking the time to do something beautiful with our craft. Levitate Tallinn is one of the newer additions to the community, and it seems that they are off to a wonderful start so far.

Diabos Mutantes

It is always interesting to see how varied the reactions are to body suspension from region to region and culture to culture. Here in the US, one neighbor witnessing a suspension can alter the laws of an entire city based upon their close minded views of it. That reaction, however, is drastically different than the warm reception it seems to be receiving in Brazil. Diabos Mutantes Suspension has been hard at work educating themselves and sharing their craft with others.
