Today, August 10th, 2010 is definitely a very important day for the world of suspension.  What might you ask makes this date so special?  Today my friends is the 80th birthday of my teacher, mentor, and friend Fakir Musafar.

If there was ever a man that deserves thanks from our community, it is without a doubt the Father of the Modern Primitive Movement. Back before most current practitioners were even born, Fakir was pioneering the world of body modification, laying the groundwork for many different forms body art, ritual and performance. With the exception of my parents, I can say without a doubt that Fakir has influenced my life more than any other person.

For me, it all started back in 1989. I was an engineering student with plans to finish school and start a rather normal suburban life.  Yes, I was already experimenting with tattoos and body piercing, but it wasn’t until a friend of mine handed me a copy of the book ReSearch’s Modern Primitives that my world truly changed.   At the time I was amazed by all the images, most notably the photos of Fakir suspending.  Little did I know that just a few years later this same man was to be my teacher and change my life forever.

Thank you for everything Fakir.  You have been such an inspiration to us all.  Without you, the world of suspension would never be what it is today.  Happy Birthday old friend.  It’s been an honor and privilege to have you in our lives.
