End of Days

As of  11:12 UTC/GMT December 21st, the Winter Solstice came and went without the world coming to an end.  Does this mean we are safe?  Is this actually or final day on earth?  Did the alien overlords simply sleep in and Armageddon is coming late this millennia? Who can say?  One thing is for sure, if we do live to see tomorrow, and you are in the Vancouver BC area, you should check out the RISE Suspension Crew performing at – After The Rapture

Dutch B.A.S.T.

The Dutch Body Art Suspension Team, or Dutch B.A.S.T., has seen many changes over time. Based out of the Netherlands, their team was originally formed by Rob and Marjolein van Rijn, however you might be more familiar with their former name, Rings of Pleasure. Their recent name change came with the addition of Jeffrey and Cas from Paradigm Bodyart, as well as Herr Dokter and Xarah von Vielenregen being added to their growing team. Judging from their photos, it seems that the collaboration of people involved is working out wonderfully for them.

On Tender Hooks

These days it seems that a new suspension video seems to appear almost daily.  Sadly, most of them are low quality cell phone videos often held vertically with little to no editing.  However, every once in a while a little gem will appear.  On Tender Hooks is a prime example.  Big budget?  Large crew?  No.  This film was shot, edited and produced by one person using a Canon 600D and a 13-inch MacBook Pro on a budget of £500. ($800)  Although the piece focuses on suspension, it delves deeper giving an inside look at both personal relationships and the director’s own journey into suspending for the first time.

On Tender Hooks – Teaser Trailer from Kate Shenton on Vimeo.

The film is not yet available for purchase or download.  For more information on where the film will be screening please visit the main website – http://www.on-tender-hooks.com – After the break a a quick clip of Kate’s first suspension.

Black Sunday

The Supersankari Suspension Team out of Helsinki, Finland has performed some fantastic suspensions in the past, with everything from extreme heights to freezing temperatures. Now this group is putting a creative twist on their suspension Sundays by coming up with themes for the days they set up. I think it’s a wonderful way to keep people interested in seeing what will come next, as well as adding some fun new elements for the team to work with each suspension day. They kicked off this new idea with Black Sunday; a day of dark music, candle light, and some great suspensions.

Hanging at the Hotel Chelsea

Dave Navarro is becoming a regular guest here on Hook Life as he continues documenting his personal experiences with body suspension. In his latest outing, he and Steve Truitt performed a suspension on the balcony of the Hotel Chelsea, which has long been rumored to be haunted. For those of you who don’t know the history of the location, feel free to check out a bit more about it here. But first, here is what Dave had to say about his suspension there:

Steve Truitt and I stepped onto the balcony at 4:30 AM in an attempt to avoid any attention. He had set up the rigging earlier in the evening and all we had to do was throw the hooks in my back and get me up. Out in the morning cold, days after Sandy swept through, there was a calm stillness about the city and in the hotel itself. The place is supposed to be haunted by many of the spirits of past tenants. I consider myself an open minded skeptic, yet I swear I could feel them. So it was me, Steve, a few friends and possibly others we weren’t directly aware of. Steve threw his hooks and we got up.

Of course I have had many times at this hotel in the past. Jane’s used to stay there and I have spent countless nights in different rooms throughout the years with an assortment of friends. Some nights I recall more than others, but they were all good. Sex, drugs, music, and blood letting were common occurrences, regardless of who I would visit. One can’t even begin to imagine the levels of inspirational and sometimes destructive energies that residually dwell within this sacred building… Shrine… Temple. Just about anyone who has spent any time at The Chelsea could write an encyclopedia worth of stories. Naturally, this place just felt right.

I don’t know if it was the company, the height, the cold, the hour, the history, the ghosts, or a combination of all of these things, but this night was my best experience with suspension so far.

This post was shared with us from Dave’s website. Be sure to stop in there as well to keep up with what else he has going on.

In Good Hands

I doubt Skindependent Suspensions needs much introduction on here. Their dedication to higher standards has not only made them some of the best practitioners in New Zealand, but also gained them the respect of some of the best suspension teams in the world. It’s no wonder that almost ever picture you see from them not only features wonderfully put together suspensions, but also suspendees that look incredibly relaxed and happy. Their October meet had a great turnout, with both new and repeat suspendees coming to work with them. It was quite a unique group that took to the air that day, including familiar faces like Lisa who is seen here doing a crucifix suspension as well as newbies such as Frank who at 57 years old was trying out suspension for the first time. With such a great attendance, the team was excited as they set to work to give these individuals an experience they wouldn’t forget.

Stelarc by the Sea

We’re approaching this year’s last breath, perhaps even this world’s, and if anyone out there is like me, this puts you in a very thoughtful nostalgia for all of the events of this past year. It’s been a phenomenal year for me, in some ways I’m still pinching myself trying to figure out if things really happened. Lucky for me, I have proof and as I look through the thousands of photos sitting in my hard drive, the hundreds of hours of video; I feel like it would be wrong not to share.

This is one of those moments I was able to capture on video using my phone. The event was the Oslo Suspension Symposium hosted by Wings of Desire in Norway. The main reason I was there was to attend the lectures, mainly to hear Stelarc speak. Not only was his lecture fascinating and heavy with concepts (my kind of candy) but it gave us a glimpse of the kind of person that is Stelarc.

After attending Allen Falkner’s lecture on the history of Suspension, which mentioned a lot of his work, he could be seen approaching people to converse. This simple show of humility left an indelible impression on me, there is much more to Stelarc that makes him an admirable person. During one of our conversations we asked him about the suspensions he performed in the 80s and as he began to speak it became clear that there was much more to the performances, there were some incredible stories to go along with the beautiful images. This is one of them. Here he talks about the amazing seaside suspension, the rigging and the obstacles he and his crew were faced with. You get a glimpse of how gracious he is about sharing his experiences with our community, his sense of humor, and how nerdy he can get when talking about the art of film.

Even though this year is coming to an end I definitely have something to look forward to, Stelarc will be attending this year’s Dallas Suspension Convention. Just one more reason Suscon should not be missed.

8° ITALIAN SUSCON official video 2° version

It’s not often that Hook Life does two articles on one event.  …and rarely, if ever, back to back.  However, Bruno just submitted this video and we felt it was so amazing that we had to share it.  Of course you can watch it small here in the blog, but we recommend clicking on this link to see the youtube page.  Then click on full screen to really see the beauty of this piece.

Suscon on the Sea

Every time the Italian Suscon comes around, I am both excited to see photos and saddened that my schedule has yet to allow time to make it to this fantastic event. Many of us have seen first hand how suspension tends to bring out a variety of emotions from people, with reactions ranging from excitement and happiness for some to tears and huge emotional releases for others. One of my favorite things about looking through the photos from this year was seeing how in almost every image the suspendees have looks of complete bliss on their faces as they suspend in this beautiful and positive environment. And there is certainly plenty of things about this event that make it such a great place to suspend. Besides the variety of great practitioners and friends that attend the event, it is set on the Italian coast with both indoor and outdoor rigging points, including one even set up over the water to allow suspendees to hang in the sea.

Halloween Roundup

Everything has wrapped up from the busy Halloween season and the many haunted attractions that the suspension community manages to make just a little creepier for everyone, and it’s time to take a look at some of the highlights from this year’s festivities. This time of year tends to be a lot of people’s favorite, and with what we do it’s no big wonder why; where normally our craft can be seen as a bit shocking, when Halloween rolls around the weird and bizarre are embraced by even the people who would normally turn and run at the sight of hooks in skin. It is always tough to cover everything with so many incredible teams performing throughout the month, so I thought I would touch on a few that I had heard about the most.
