Theater with a Point

October is bringing two more opportunities to see performances by Constructs of Ritual Evolution in the Oakland and Los Angeles areas. First up will be a performance at NIMBY, the largest do it yourself art space in the Oakland area, on October 16th at 9pm. They will be joined by the Extra Action Marching Band, 2piR, Jon Sarriugarte’s Traveling Wonders of the Boiler Bar, 4pyre2, Spy Emerson, and many more. It’s definitely a show to catch if you are in the area.

One on One Time with CoRE

Continued from blog post above – If you’d like to have a little more one on one time with CoRE, you may also be interested in their live demonstration coming up October 24th, which will be open to the public. It will be held at Dungeon Corp Studios in Van Nuys, California; just north of Los Angeles. They will be hosting live demonstrations with a question and answer session to help you better understand body suspension and what CoRE is. If you are just curious about suspensions, or you have even thought about joining CoRE, this is the event to attend. For more information, please visit their website We Are CoRE.

If you have an upcoming event you would like to share, please send it to southtownbaby@suspension.org

Happy Birthday Shannon

Influence – Yes influence would be the best word to describe the man you see below.  Over the past 16+ years his brainchild BME has influenced more people in the body modification world than any other website, possibly even surpassing print media.  Although he has now moved on to other projects, the suspension community owes this man a huge thanks for all that he has done over the years.  Without his efforts, we would not be where we are today.

So who is this person?  His name is Shannon Larratt.  Although he is not known for being a suspension practitioner, over the years he’s been a huge supporter of our art form.  Without his online creations such as IAM, many of us would have never met nor exchanged information.  Shannon, you’ve helped us so much over the years.  Thank you so much for everything… and of course happy birthday.

After the break, the many faces of Shannon:

Blood Manor

October is right around the corner, and that means fall leaves, cooler weather, and most importantly, Halloween. I’m sure many of you who are big fans of Halloween fun have already heard of Blood Manor, New York’s premier haunted house. This Halloween will mark the sixth year that Blood Manor has been terrorizing guests, and with 5,000 square feet and 19 different creepy scenes, there is plenty to scream about. While most of the haunted attractions rely on special effects and makeup, DisGraceLanD Hook Squad will be there with some friends making people squirm the old fashioned way, no fake blood required.

The Neglect Series

Generally when photos appear on Hook Life they portray suspension as positive and empowering.  However, today’s image from Carl Farmer aka Red Tree Studio definitely breaks from the norm.  The piece below, featuring Kay Fagan from Post Modern Sleeze, is just one of a larger set of dark, yet beautiful images from his latest project – The Neglect Series.

After the break, a video showing more images from this collection.

Getting Hooked

There are a lot of suspension teams that  receive mixed reviews; some people love them, while others will have issues with this or that. Then there are the groups that I continually hear positive comments and praise for. HOOKED Suspension Team, out of Omaha, Nebraska, absolutely falls into that second category. The members of HOOKED are dedicated to creating a suspension environment that is comfortable and inviting to everyone involved. They put forward the idea that no one should be judged for their dreams, and their willingness to work with individuals to help them achieve their goals has made this group what it is today.

That Wonderful Feeling

Outdoor locations add a lot of variables to the long list of things to consider when performing a suspension. Will the weather cooperate, what if you forget something, how far are you going on foot, along with many other things that have to be taken into account while planning it. However, when all of those pieces come together for it; you have beautiful weather, that perfect location, and a great group of people, the experience makes it worth all the effort.

Mastodon: Iron Tusk

I think a lot of people would agree suspending and good music go hand in hand. I love listening to something that gets me in the right mindset before I go up, and for me it’s got to be metal.  Naturally, I fell in love when I saw Mastodon’s video for Iron Tusk featuring the work of Psychotic Suspensions from Atlanta, Georgia.

After the break more stills and the original unedited video.

The Art of Suspension

While searching through photographs online, I have come across more and more suspension related artwork; everything from traditional sketches and painting to designs for fliers and group logos. Taking part in a suspension or even just witnessing one can be a very moving experience. It makes sense that those feelings would inspire other forms of art as well. The artist featured here, Ivan Ponomarev who runs Greed Design and Photo in Bryansk, Russia, created these designs for The Sinner Team.

From Russia with Love

#Leeds Suspensions may be a name that is unfamiliar to many of you. Founded in April 2010 by Arseniy Andersson, they are one of the newest teams in our growing community. Obviously, being the new kids hasn’t slowed them down any; with stunning pictures like these showing up around the internet, it’s no wonder that they are quickly gaining attention.
